What are we doing?
Delivered on behalf of Historic Environment Scotland, as part of our Creative Caerlaverock project in partnership with The Stove Network.
Working with our local LGBTQ+ community + allies we are creating a new imagined queer artefact inspired by the history of Caerlaverock Castle for The Missing Museum.
We are also creating a pack of interactive cards which reveal the Queer Histories associated with Caerlaverock. The Quest for Queer Caerlaverock deck encourages visitors to explore the Castle with a fresh new lens.
To be revealed for LGBT History Month, February 2025.

The Queer Caerlaverock brief was to engage more local LGBTQ+ community members and their allies with Caerlaverock.

Working with local LGBTQ+ community members and allies, aswell as collaborators ‘Maiden, Mother. Crone CIC’ supported by HES Caerlaverock stie staff we researched and explored the history of Caerlaverock, and began to design an imagined missing artefact. This is being developed into a new sandstone carving to be displayed in Caerlaverock Visitor Centre, with accompanying interpretation panels which explain its relevance and symbolism.
Working with local artist Alice Griffin our creative director DJ McDowall created a set of cards which reveal the Queer Histories of Caerlaverock Castle and its surrounding area. The Quest for Queer Caerlaverock pack also encourages visitors to see it through a new more inclusive lens.

The new Queer Caerlaverock sandstone carving and interpretation panel will be on display in Caerlaverock Visitor Centre.
The limited edition Quest for Queer Caerlaverock deck of interactive cards were launched at Caerlaverock for Pride month, and are currently being developed into a new educational resource, soon to be available for download and at the visitor centre.
